KINGDOM FUNGI – EASY NOTES FOR NEET

1. Introduction

  • Fungi form a separate kingdom of heterotrophic organisms.
  • They show very diverse shapes and habitats.
  • Common examples you see in daily life:
    • Bread mould on moist bread
    • Rotten fruits
    • Mushrooms and toadstools
  • White patches on mustard leaves are caused by fungi.

2. Importance of Fungi

  • Some fungi are useful:
    • Yeast → used in bread making and beer production
    • Penicillium → produces antibiotics
  • Some fungi are harmful:
    • Cause diseases in plants and animals
    • Example: Wheat rust (Puccinia)
  • Fungi are found:
    • In air, water, soil, plants, animals
  • They grow best in:
    • Warm and humid places
  • Food is kept in refrigerator to prevent fungal spoilage.

3. Body Structure of Fungi

  • Except yeast, fungi are filamentous (thread-like).
  • Their body is made of:
    • Hyphae → long thread-like structures
    • Mycelium → network of hyphae
  • Types of hyphae:
    • Coenocytic hyphae → no cross walls, multinucleated
    • Septate hyphae → have cross walls (septa)
  • Cell wall of fungi is made of:
    • Chitin + polysaccharides

4. Nutrition in Fungi

  • Fungi are heterotrophic (cannot make food).
  • Types of nutrition:
    • Saprophytes → feed on dead matter
    • Parasites → live on living organisms and harm them
    • Symbionts → live in association
      • Lichens → algae + fungi
      • Mycorrhiza → fungi + plant roots

5. Reproduction in Fungi

(A) Vegetative reproduction

  • By:
    • Fragmentation
    • Fission
    • Budding

(B) Asexual reproduction

  • By spores:
    • Conidia
    • Sporangiospores
    • Zoospores

(C) Sexual reproduction

  • By spores:
    • Oospores
    • Ascospores
    • Basidiospores

6. Sexual Cycle in Fungi (VERY IMPORTANT)

Three main steps:

  1. Plasmogamy → fusion of cytoplasm
  2. Karyogamy → fusion of nuclei
  3. Meiosis → formation of haploid spores

7. Special Feature – Dikaryotic Stage

  • In some fungi:
    • Two nuclei exist in one cell (n + n condition)
  • This stage is called:
    • Dikaryon (dikaryotic phase)
  • Later:
    • nuclei fuse → diploid stage (2n)

8. Classification of Fungi (Main Groups)


8.1 PHYCOMYCETES

  • Found in:
    • Water
    • Moist places
    • Decaying wood
  • Mycelium:
    • Aseptate and coenocytic
  • Asexual reproduction:
    • Zoospores (motile)
    • Aplanospores (non-motile)
  • Sexual reproduction:
    • Zygospore formation
  • Examples:
    • Mucor
    • Rhizopus (bread mould)
    • Albugo (mustard parasite)

8.2 ASCOMYCETES (SAC FUNGI)

  • Mostly multicellular, some unicellular (yeast)
  • Habitat:
    • Saprophytes
    • Parasites
    • Decomposers
    • Coprophilous (grow on dung)
  • Mycelium:
    • Branched and septate
  • Asexual spores:
    • Conidia (exogenous formation)
  • Sexual spores:
    • Ascospores (endogenous in asci)
  • Fruit body:
    • Ascocarp
  • Examples:
    • Aspergillus
    • Claviceps
    • Neurospora (genetics studies)
    • Edible: morels, truffles

8.3 BASIDIOMYCETES

  • Examples:
    • Mushrooms
    • Puffballs
    • Bracket fungi
  • Habitat:
    • Soil, wood, trees
  • Mycelium:
    • Branched and septate
  • Asexual spores:
    • Generally absent
  • Sexual reproduction:
    • Dikaryotic stage present
  • Spores:
    • Basidiospores (formed on basidium)
  • Fruit body:
    • Basidiocarp
  • Examples:
    • Agaricus (mushroom)
    • Puccinia (rust)
    • Ustilago (smut)

8.4 DEUTEROMYCETES (IMPERFECT FUNGI)

  • Called imperfect fungi
  • Reason:
    • Only asexual stage known
  • Sexual stage discovered later → moved to other groups
  • Reproduction:
    • Only by conidia
  • Mycelium:
    • Septate and branched
  • Role:
    • Decomposers
    • Help in mineral cycling
  • Examples:
    • Alternaria
    • Colletotrichum
    • Trichoderma
