Endomembrane System

Definition

  • The endomembrane system is a group of cell organelles that work together in a coordinated way.
  • These organelles help in the synthesis, modification, packaging, transport, and digestion of materials inside the cell.

Components of Endomembrane System

  1. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
  2. Golgi Apparatus (Golgi Complex)
  3. Lysosomes
  4. Vacuoles

Important NEET Point

  • These organelles are considered together because their functions are interconnected.
  • Mitochondria, chloroplasts, and peroxisomes are NOT part of the endomembrane system because their functions are independent and not coordinated with the above organelles.

1. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

Discovery and Structure

  • Under an electron microscope, ER appears as a network of tiny tubes and membranes spread throughout the cytoplasm.
  • The word "reticulum" means a network.
  • ER forms a continuous membrane system inside the cell.

Functions of Structure

  • ER divides the cell interior into two compartments:
    • Luminal compartment = inside the ER.
    • Extra-luminal compartment = cytoplasm outside the ER.
  • This separation allows different cellular activities to occur efficiently.

NEET Fact

  • ER is present only in eukaryotic cells.

Types of Endoplasmic Reticulum

A. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)

Structure

  • Ribosomes are attached to the outer surface of RER.
  • Due to ribosomes, the surface appears rough under a microscope.

Location

  • Often continuous with the outer membrane of the nucleus.

Functions

  1. Protein synthesis
    • Ribosomes synthesize proteins on RER.
  2. Protein transport
    • Newly formed proteins enter the ER lumen.
  3. Protein secretion
    • Proteins meant for export from the cell are processed through RER.

Cells Rich in RER

  • Pancreatic cells
  • Plasma cells
  • Secretory gland cells

NEET Keyword

👉 RER = Protein factory of the cell

B. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)

Structure

  • Ribosomes are absent.
  • Surface appears smooth.

Functions

  1. Lipid synthesis
    • Produces fats, phospholipids, and cholesterol.
  2. Steroid hormone synthesis
    • In animal cells, steroid hormones are produced in SER.
  3. Detoxification
    • Helps remove drugs and harmful substances (especially in liver cells).

Cells Rich in SER

  • Liver cells
  • Adrenal gland cells
  • Testis and ovary cells

NEET Keyword

👉 SER = Lipid and Steroid Hormone Factory

Quick Comparison: RER vs SER

Feature RER SER
Ribosomes Present Absent
Appearance Rough Smooth
Main Product Proteins Lipids
Function Protein synthesis and secretion Lipid synthesis and detoxification
Continuous with nucleus Yes Indirectly through ER network

2. Golgi Apparatus (Golgi Complex)

Discovery

  • Discovered by in 1898.
  • Initially observed as densely stained structures near the nucleus.
  • Later named Golgi bodies in his honor.

Structure

Basic Structure

  • Made up of many flat, disc-shaped membrane sacs called cisternae.
  • Diameter of each cisterna is about 0.5–1.0 μm.
  • Cisternae are arranged in parallel stacks.

Arrangement

  • Golgi apparatus is usually located near the nucleus.
  • It has two distinct faces:

1. Cis Face (Forming Face)

  • Convex side.
  • Faces the ER.
  • Receives materials from ER.

2. Trans Face (Maturing Face)

  • Concave side.
  • Faces the plasma membrane.
  • Sends processed materials to their destinations.

Easy Flow

ER → Cis Face → Golgi Cisternae → Trans Face → Cell Membrane/Other Organelles

Functions of Golgi Apparatus

1. Modification of Proteins

  • Proteins received from ER are chemically modified.

2. Packaging

  • Golgi packs proteins and lipids into vesicles.

3. Sorting

  • Directs materials to the correct cellular destination.

4. Secretion

  • Helps release substances outside the cell.

5. Formation of Lysosomes

  • Lysosomes originate from Golgi vesicles.

6. Cell Wall Material Formation (Plants)

  • Produces pectin and hemicellulose required for plant cell walls.

NEET One-Line Summary

Endomembrane System

Why Are Living Organisms Classified? CBSE Topper Answer Format

Why are Living Organisms Classified? Hierarchical classification of living organisms explained through a clear taxonomy tree diagram. - Dr.Sanjaykumar Pawar  Answer: Biological classification is the scientific arrangement of organisms into a hierarchical system of groups and subgroups based on their similarities, differences, and evolutionary relationships. Need for Classification 1. To Facilitate Identification Millions of organisms exist on Earth. Classification provides a systematic framework for the easy and accurate identification of known as well as newly discovered organisms. 2. To Simplify Study of Organisms It is not possible to study each organism individually. Grouping organisms with similar characteristics makes their study convenient and systematic . Knowledge of one organism helps in understanding other members of the same group. 3. To Understand Evolutionary Relationships (Phylogeny) Classification reveals the evolutionary history of organisms. ...
