Kingdom Protista –
Kingdom Protista is one of the most interesting groups in biological classification because it includes organisms that look simple but are actually eukaryotic (having a true nucleus). These organisms are mostly single-celled and live in water or moist environments.
In this blog, we will understand Kingdom Protista in a very simple, line-by-line way so it becomes easy for NEET preparation.
What is Kingdom Protista?
• Kingdom Protista includes all single-celled eukaryotic organisms.
• “Eukaryotic” means the cell has a well-defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
• Protists are mostly aquatic organisms (live in water).
• They act as a link between plants, animals, and fungi.
• The boundaries of this kingdom are not very strict.
• Some organisms may be classified differently by different scientists.
• Protists can reproduce both asexually and sexually.
• Sexual reproduction involves fusion of cells and formation of a zygote.
General Features of Protists
• They are unicellular eukaryotes.
• They have a true nucleus.
• They may have cilia or flagella for movement.
• They are mostly found in freshwater or marine environments.
• Some are autotrophic while others are heterotrophic.
Major Groups of Kingdom Protista
Kingdom Protista is divided into five important groups:
- Chrysophytes
- Dinoflagellates
- Euglenoids
- Slime moulds
- Protozoans
Let’s understand each one simply.
1. Chrysophytes (Diatoms and Golden Algae)
• Includes diatoms and desmids (golden algae).
• Found in both freshwater and marine water.
• They float freely in water and are called plankton.
Important feature of diatoms:
• Their cell wall is made of silica (glass-like material).
• The cell wall has two overlapping halves like a soap box.
Special importance:
• Dead diatoms form deposits called diatomaceous earth.
• This is used in polishing and filtration.
• Diatoms are major producers in oceans (base of food chain).
2. Dinoflagellates
• Mostly marine organisms.
• They are photosynthetic.
• They show different colours like yellow, green, brown, blue, or red.
Cell structure:
• Cell wall has stiff cellulose plates.
• They have two flagella (one vertical, one horizontal).
Important phenomenon – Red Tides:
• Rapid multiplication causes sea water to turn red.
• Example: Gonyaulax
Harmful effects:
• They release toxins.
• These toxins can kill fish and marine animals.
3. Euglenoids
• Found mostly in freshwater, especially stagnant water.
• They do not have a cell wall.
• Instead, they have a flexible protein layer called pellicle.
Movement:
• They have two flagella (one long, one short).
Nutrition:
• In sunlight → they are autotrophic (photosynthetic).
• Without sunlight → they become heterotrophic.
Special point:
• Their pigments are similar to green plants.
Example: Euglena
4. Slime Moulds
• They are saprophytic organisms (feed on dead matter).
• Found on decaying leaves and wood.
Feeding:
• They move and engulf food particles.
Plasmodium stage:
• Under favourable conditions, they form a large mass called plasmodium.
• It can spread over a large area.
Reproduction:
• In unfavourable conditions, they form fruiting bodies.
• These produce spores.
Spores:
• Very resistant.
• Can survive for many years.
• Spread through air.
5. Protozoans
• Protozoans are heterotrophic organisms.
• They act as predators or parasites.
• They are considered primitive relatives of animals.
Protozoans are divided into four groups:
(1) Amoeboid Protozoans
• Found in water and moist soil.
• Move using pseudopodia (false feet).
Example: Amoeba
• Some are parasitic, like Entamoeba.
(2) Flagellated Protozoans
• Move using flagella.
• Can be free-living or parasitic.
Example: Trypanosoma
• Causes sleeping sickness.
(3) Ciliated Protozoans
• Covered with many cilia.
• Cilia help in movement and feeding.
Example: Paramecium
• Cilia push food into the gullet for digestion.
(4) Sporozoans
• Do not have movement organs.
• Have a spore-like stage in life cycle.
Example: Plasmodium
• Causes malaria in humans.
